Throwback Thursday: Wishes logo

Before Disney Dreams! and The Enchanted Fireworks there was Wishes, a fireworks display that used for the first time ever in Disneyland Paris still projections and lasers on Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant.

Unlike for Disney Dreams where its projectors were placed on top of the Main Street, U.S.A. buildings, where both the projectors and lasers hidden in a large Wishes logo in the middle of Central Plaza.

Because the projectors where so low to the ground, guests were not allowed to stand in front of the Wishes logo and had to sit down.

Wishes ran during the summer seasons of 2005 until 2007.

Throwback Thursday: Cast Member drawing

On May the 4th (be with you) 2005 I was wondering through Discoveryland when I suddenly stumbled upon a maintenance Cast Member apparently making a drawing. I asked what he was doing, so he showed me his sketch of Orbitron – Machines Volantes and Space Mountain: Mission 2.

It turned out he loved making sketches of attractions in the park during his break.

Happy Birthday Toy Story Playland

Today Toy Story Playland celebrated its birthday. Exactly three years ago this mini-land with three unique Disney attractions, one shop and lots of themed props were added to the existing Toon Studio zone, on a grassy field next to the Studio Tram Tour Behind the Magic station.

Around 2008 a former French website dedicated to Disneyland Paris broke news that three temporary, unthemed fun fair attractions would be installed in Walt Disney Studios Park to help with the struggling need for additional capacity. This rumor persisted for a long time, but was finally dismissed when plans where revealed to add an entire mini-land dedicated to the world and characters of Pixar’s first animated feature film.

Plans for the land evolved over the course of months, from a flat version build on an oversized board game to the lush version with large bamboos and large Christmas lights. Even the number of attractions was changed as two RC Racer tracks were downgraded to just one and some for Toy Soldier Parachute Drop. A playground was also supposed to be part of the Fort Emery, was dropped as well.

After the land opened in Walt Disney Studios Park it was adapted for Hong Kong Disneyland and there’s a rumor that Shanghai Disneyland might feature their own version as well.

Happy birthday Andy and the Toy Story gang!

Throwback Thursday: Finding Nemo photo location

The Finding Nemo photo location was located on what’s now Hollywood Boulevard. It followed up on the Bugs Land photo location around 2004 and featured an underwater backdrop with a large Bruce the shark suspended on it. Guests had to take place in front of a rocky coral featuring Marlin and Dory, which “disappeared” from time to time.

The photo location eventually went away when Hollywood Boulevard construction was being prepared.

Remember Cyber Space Mountain?

Before Stitch Live! and Playhouse Disney Live on Stage there was the Television Production Tour in which guests were taken on a tour through the backstage of a real Disney Channel production, only until a few years after the park opened, pulled out of Walt Disney Studios Park and left empty soundstages behind.

The post show of the tour was called the Zapping Zone (or Disney Channel Cyberspace according to some signs) with a bunch of old interactive games that came from the closed Disney Quest Chicago (a Disney-version of a games arcade). One of the popular attractions was Cyber Space Mountain, in which guests could design their own rollercoaster on a computer and then ride it in a motion simulator.

In 2006 both the tour and the post show closed down to make way for new attractions.

Flashback: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opening

Today exactly 5 years ago The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was officially inaugurated in Walt Disney Studios Park.

Although the attraction was already open for guests since December 2007, it wasn’t until 5 April 2008 until it was introduced to the press, all for marketing reasons ánd a good tie-in with the prolongation of the 15th Anniversary celebrations.

The day started with lots of animation all over the resort, tied-in to Tower of Terror. Bellhops could be found at the Disney Hotels and a large crashed elevator could be found in Walt Disney Studios Park. This oversized prop was used in a marketing stunt in the United Kingdom months before the press event.

Later in the afternoon another attraction officially opened: Stitch Live! It was Karl Holz and the Disney Ambassadors Wendy and Arnaud, that inaugurated the replacement of the Television Production Tour. High School Musical 2: School’s Out! was performed for the first time right after that.

In the evening, invitees were welcomed in a large inflatable tent where a walking dinner was presented. This tent was located in the backstage area behind the Studio Tram Tour loading station.

All evening long Disney Studio 1 and Hollywood Boulevard came back to life as if it were that faithful night in 1939. Hollywood residents, cars and music from that era livened up the evening. Highlight of the evening was an enormous light and sound spectacle that used the Hollywood Tower Hotel façade as a giant canvas to retell the story of what happened that faithful night in 1939.

The press evening concluded with a dance party in Disney Studio 1 with unlimited rides on Tower of Terror all night long…

Flashback: Easter at Disneyland Paris in 2005

A few years ago Easter was a big thing at Disneyland Paris. For the 2005 edition of this season, a bunch of decorations were built. Rabbits were placed all over Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland, all pointing to the back of Fantasyland. This is were the Easter Village was located.

Decorations in the Easter Village included the oversized rabbits, goofy looking chickens and the infamous giant egg filled with stuffed Thumpers.

Inside Alice’s Curious Labyrinth, there was an actual easter egg hunt. Kids who found a hidden egg could later exchange it at a nearby desk for a surprise.

Several work shops were located in The Old Mill area where kids could paint eggs or see how chocolate figurines were made.

The Fantasy Festival Stage was performing “Welcome to Wonderland”. This short-lived show re-told the story of Alice in Wonderland using nothing but songs from the movie. The main songs used were I’m Late, All In The Golden Afternoon and the Happy Un-Birthday Song.

Finding Oz in Disneyland Paris

Disney has just released the big blockbuster movie “Oz the Great and Powerful”, a prequel to the original books by L. Frank Baum.

Walt Disney had a big fascination for the stories about Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Wizard and all the other Oz characters. He loved them so much, he bought the rights to the books in the late fifties to make a movie called “The Rainbow Road to Oz”.

This concept eventually fell through and when the Storybook Land Canal Boats for the original Disneyland in California was being designed, an elaborate scene with scenes from the world of Oz would have been placed inside a giant mountain made out of candy.

These plans as well fell through and were replaced by scenes from Walt’s famous animated movies like Pinocchio, Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

When Disneyland Paris opened in 1992, it became clear that the park needed added capacity. Plans for a large expansion behind Fantasyland Station were quickly abandoned and replaced by two attractions: Casey Jr Le Petit Train du Cirque and Le Pays des Contes de Fées, the French counterpart of Disneyland’s Storybook Land Canal Boats.

Although this version is shorter than its American cousin and does not feature a Cast Member in each boat telling the stories of the miniature scenes, the Paris version did get one thing Walt Disney always had in mind to add to this ride: the wonderful world of Oz!

Le Pays des Contes de Fées concludes with a scene representing the castle from the Wicked Witch of the West and Esmerald City, based on Disney’s 1985 movie Return to Oz. Miniature figures of Dorothy and Toto, the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow can be seen overlooking the banks of the Story Book Land canal. A figurine of Tiktok, one of the 1985’s movie characters has been missing for years.

Do you remember Kids’ Carnival?

Kids Carnival

Kids Carnival was a mid-season that ran in February and March of 2005 and 2006. It succeeded The Lion King Carnival which took place on Central Plaza in 2004. For that occasion, Pride Rock was build in front of Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant and a live show was performed on it several times during the day. The show even involved a real lion cub!

The Lion King Carnival got replaced in 2005 by an all new experience, this time on Town Square. Colorful ribbons and banners (although cheap and tacky looking) decorated the Town Square shop fronts and trees. Main Street Station was decorated with the season’s logo and three weird, organic-like creatures could be found around the gazebo.

There were several entertainment offerings during Kids Carnival, which included the Carnival Fever character meet ‘n’ greets with live DJ, The Jungle Carnival and the Under the Sea Carnival cavalcades. A mash-up of both cavalcades was performed at the end of the day.

Kids Carnival

The Jungle Carnival cavalcade featured characters and music from The Jungle Book and The Lion King. Costumes and props were re-used from The Lion King Carnival. The Under the Sea Carnival was based on The Little Mermaid and featured the rare Sebastian character, as well as Ariel as mermaid on a small float.

The cavalcades featured a new song composed by Vasile Sirli, called La-Li-Da Carnaval, which was released on CD and is featured on the 15th Anniversary and 20th Anniversary cd albums. A limited edition pin shaped as the Kids Carnival logo was released as well.

Carnival season didn’t return in 2007 due to the 15th Anniversary celebrations which lasted all year long.

Halloween flashback: Disney Villains Parade

The Disney Villains Parade was a popular seasonal make-over of the Wonderful World of Disney Parade.

In 2003, when the Halloween season was seriously expanded, the Disney Villains parade was first introduced. The characters on the Wonderful World of Disney Parade floats were replaced by their villain counterparts. Ariel got replaced by Ursula, Sleeping Beauty by Maleficent, Aladdin and Jasmine by Jafar, and so on.

The Pumpkin Men characters also made an appearance in the parade, and a few years later the Pink Witches as well.

Do you remember this parade make-over? Take a trip back in time with these photos from the 2006 version, starring Stitch and the Pink Witches.
