Throwback Thursday: Who robbed the bank?

“Who robbed the bank?” was a streetmosphere-type show in Frontierland during Disney’s Halloween Festival in 2004. It featured stunt men as bank robbers jumping over the rooftops of Fuente del Oro Restaurante. The show used lots of slapstick humor and didn’t use spoken dialog, instead the main characters held up signs with words. There was lots of running back and forward, falling of the roof tops and ladders tipping over.

A stunt show featuring Zorro took place at the same location in 1993.

Disney’s Newport Bay Club make-over preview

Disney’s Newport Bay Club is Disneyland Paris’ largest hotel and in 1992 even the largest in Western-Europe with almost 1100 rooms. It was designed by architect Robert A.M. Stern in a New England nautical theme with many references to boats and ships.

Although there have been numerous refurbishments over the past 20 years, the entire complex is starting to show its age. And that’s why Euro Disney SCA and hotel management, as well as Disneyland Paris Imagineering have worked out a complete refurbishment from top to bottom.

Soon scaffolding will go up on the hotel façade and all wooden planks will be stripped and be replaced with a synthetic replacement which will be much more durable against the harsh Marne-la-Vallée weather. Special insulation will be placed behind the new planks for ecological reasons and all windows will be replaced. And it doesn’t stop there, the entire roof is going to be replaced as well and the light bulbs on the façade will be upgraded to LED technology with special caps that simulate the current yellowish glow.

On the inside the lobby will be redesigned to allow a better guest flow, as well as the reception desks. Other areas of the hotel like the restaurants and swimming pool will all get some attention.

On 26 September 2013 a group of bloggers was invited by Disneyland Paris for presentations about the future refurbishment projects in the resort. This included a guided tour of Disney’s Newport Bay Club and a look at the mock up of the upcoming new room designs.

Just like the make-overs of Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe and Disney’s Sequoia Lodge they will carry Disney touches on the walls. Classic drawings of Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Pluto are featured on wallpaper and a Mickey Mouse shaped steering wheel serves as the bed headboard. A small desk with mirror has all the connections for wired internet and power plugs hidden from view behind a small door.

The remodeled Executive Rooms were previewed as well:

Note: it was pointed out during our tour that the runners were missing on the beds.

The new rooms definitely look great and a lot warmer then the previous ones. Make the comparison: on the left the current rooms, on the right the remodeled rooms.

The refurbishment will start probably next year and will be done in 3 phases (North, Central and East wings).

Throwback Thursday: The Phantom Wedding

The Phantom Wedding was a projection mapping show on Phantom Manor during Disney’s Halloween Party on 31 October 2004. The entire building was covered with white fabric to allow a good image.

The show told the story of Phantom Manor using still and video images, 3D animations and live dancers. It was very well received among fans, though it didn’t return for the Halloween Parties the years after.

The Phantom Wedding was developped by the same company that did the The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opening and was also consulted during the creation of Disney Dreams.

Minnie’s Costume Couture

Minnie’s Costume Couture is a photo location with Minnie Mouse, designed to resemble a costume workshop. Props like a sewing machine, baskets, mirror, … have all been “toonified”.

It’s located across Casey’s Corner at the old Mickey Mouse photo location, but it’s located on ground level to accommodate wheel chair users as well.

In 2007 a brand new show was introduced for the Halloween Season: The Disney Villains Halloween Showtime, starring Minnie Mouse, Stitch, Maleficent and the Disney Villains.

This show was quite popular among the fans and kept returning every Halloween season until 2011 when the stage was removed in front of Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant.

Over 20 photos can be found in the Photos Magiques gallery of the 2007 version of this show. Here’s a selection:

Iron Man invades Disney Blockbuster Café

High School Musical, the has-been Disney Channel movie, has been expelled from Disney Blockbuster Cafe by one of Marvel’s biggest heroes: Iron Man.

Last week lights when out for the cast of High School Musical when posters, banners and the sporting gear was removed and replaced by imagery of Tony Stark’s alterego.

Here’s a photo tour of how Blockbuster Cafe looked like passed weekend. It’s expected that more theming will appear, especially some sort of props.

It should also be noted that the Bureau Passeport Annuel has been removed from the side room of the restaurant and currently sits empty with some High School Musical posters still up.

Oh, if you don’t remember what his place looked like before… Check out this post on magicforum!

Throwback Thursday: The sky is falling

Back in 2005 when Disney’s first computer animated featured Chicken Little was about to get released in France, a big marketing campaign was set up in Walt Disney Studios Park.

First, a large billboard was constructed against the façade of Disney Studio with Chicken Little’s head popping up over a blue sky with the movie’s logo and was completed with a big piece of sky next to the billboard.

On Animation Courtyard a mini street set with buildings from the movie’s town Oakey Oaks was placed in front of the Animagique queue line and featured almost daily character appearances of Chicken Little and Abbey Mallard, who would also participate in the Disney Cinema Parade.

The photo location was removed in 2007 right before the area was renamed to Toon Studio.

The big billboard in front of Disney Studio 1 was replaced, to much dismay of many fans, by an even larger image of Disney-Pixar’s Cars.
